Colombo National Museum established in 1877. The building was originally constructed for the Ceylon branch of the Royal society of later come to be known as the Colombo Museum. Popular amongst locals as well as foreigners by 1940.it is branches were opens in Jaffna,Kandy and Rathnapura.
The ground floor displays artefacts belonging to the per and proto historic Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and traditional periods with stone antiquities gallery. and on the upper floor paintings,ancient textiles, potteryand ceramics, coins, art and crafts.presentation of traditional agricultural methods .The Tholuwila Buddha statue at the lobby of the entrance to the Museum is the main attraction.
The Colombo Museum is open to the public from 9.am to 5.pm.
