Delgamuwa Raja Maha Viharaya


Delgamuwa Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple, situated 0.5 km from the main Colombo. Kuruwita town at the end of vihara Mawatha on a hillock.The temple was hidden during for over 40 years Portuguese rule in sri Lanka. The history of Delgamuwa vihara goes back to the period of sithawaka kingdom with the audience of king Mayadunne the tooth relic was brought to Delgamuwa vihara for further safekeeping and kept inside a kurah grinding stone. A few years ofter the removal of tooth relic, Delgamuwa vihara was demolished by the Portuguese who constructed a fort inside.
